Penelope.ai and EQUATOR Network collaboration wins Cochrane-REWARD prize for reducing research waste

We have been working with the UK EQUATOR Center to develop www.goodreports.org - a place where researchers can easily find and complete medical reporting guidelines. We have integrated goodreports.org into our manuscript checker so that, when appropriate, Penelope.ai advises authors to complete a checklist and provides them with a goodreports.org link.

BMJ Open was one of the first journals that we rolled this feature out to. Every month, hundreds of authors submitting to BMJ Open opt to use Penelope.ai to check their own work first. In a pilot earlier this year involving over 200 authors, we found that without Penelope.ai 1 in 3 authors failed to submit a reporting checklist. Of the authors that used Penelope.ai, this was reduced to 1 in 8.

The Cochrane-REWARD prize recognises initiatives to reduce waste in health research and was awarded during the gala dinner of the Cochrane Colloquium, on Monday, September 17th, in Edinburgh.
